STUDENT ADMISSIONS

  Students who wish to apply for admission to a New Castle County VoTech High School (Delcastle Technical High School, Hodgson VoTech High School, Howard High School of Technology, or St. Georges Technical High School) must submit an application to the Office of Admissions.

How to Obtain an Application

Applications are mailed after November 15th to all 8th grade traditional public school students who live in New Castle County. Applications are also available upon request from the guidance offices of any public, charter, private, and religious middle school or high school in New Castle County, from any of the VoTech high schools, or by calling the NCC VoTech School District Office of Admissions (302-995-8035).

Admissions Process/Timeline

Approximately 1,250 students are offered enrollment to attend a New Castle County Vo-Tech high school each year.

Generally, the admissions application is submitted to the student's current school counselor, who will forward it and supplementary information to the NCC Vo-Tech Office of Admissions. Or, an application may be submitted directly to the NCC Vo-Tech Office of Admissions, but must include copies of the applicant's final report card from the previous school year and the most recent (current school year) report card. Report cards must include attendance information. For applicants who receive special education services, a copy of their current Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Evaluation Summary Report must be included.

Students are encouraged to submit completed applications to their school counselors by December 12th.

Applications submitted to counselors are then forwarded to the VoTech Office of Admissions by January 6th.

Applications that are directly submitted to the NCC Vo-Tech Office of Admissions (1417 Newport Road, Wilmington, DE 19804) should be received by January 6th.

Ninth grade students are encouraged to submit completed applications to their school counselors by April 2nd.

Ninth grade applications submitted to counselors are then forwarded to the VoTech Office of Admissions by April 24th.

The VoTech Office of Admissions WILL CONTINUE to consider applications received any time during the school year or during the summer months; however, applications submitted by January 6 do receive primary consideration. Applications submitted after January 6 are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applications are reviewed by admissions counselors at Delcastle, Hodgson, Howard, and St. Georges VoTech high schools between January and March.

Primary criteria for student selection include attendance, grades, and comments from school personnel. The capacity of various career programs and classroom size determine the number of students accepted for enrollment. District staff attempts to place each student in the school and career program of first preference. However, if the number of applicants exceeds the available space, students may be offered their secondary preferences. Students who are not initially selected may be reconsidered as openings occur.

Admissions Notification

The NCC VoTech Admissions policy is to provide as many students as possible the opportunity to attend. Safety considerations in the schools' career labs and available classroom space limit the number of students who can be accommodated each year.

Eighth grade students who are selected for admission to Delcastle, Hodgson, Howard, or St. Georges VoTech high schools will receive a letter before March 15. Students must verify their acceptance by filing a Student Registration Form within two weeks of their notification. All admissions acceptances are "provisional" until the student is considered promoted.

* (See Delaware Promotion Requirements)

Students who are not offered admission will receive a letter before March 15. These students may be given the opportunity for reconsideration if openings occur.

* (See Applicant Reconsideration information).

Ninth grade students will receive notification of admission status by June 1.

Applicant Reconsideration

Some students who are offered admission to a VoTech high school may not be able to accept. This will create a small number of openings for students who originally were not offered admission.

Students who wish to be reconsidered should submit an updated report card, such as a copy of a 2nd, 3rd, and/or 4th marking period report card, to the Office of Admissions, NCC VoTech School District, 1417 Newport Road, Wilmington, DE 19804.

As openings occur, the Office of Admissions will notify any student who, upon reconsideration, is selected for admission.

Delaware Promotion Requirements

Admission assignment for all eighth-grade students is provisional until receipt of the student's final eighth-grade report card. Students must meet their present school district and state requirements for promotion (which includes earning a passing final grade in English and at least one other core academic class - Math, Science, or Social Studies) in order to attend a NCC VoTech high school. Students who are offered admission but fail to meet their school district and state promotion requirements are not eligible to attend a vo-tech high school.
